Health service

Foreign students can choose among different options of health insurance.
Please note that for non-EU students it is compulsory to hold a health insurance (or a health insurance payment receipt) in order to apply for the residence permit. The residence permit has the same validity in time of the health insurance.

1. SSN (Italian National Health Service)

Subscription to the SSN it’s not compulsory, however it is warmly suggested because it entitles you to the same treatment as Italian citizens including: choice of a general practitioner who can visit you free of charge and who will refer you to specialists (dentists, orthopaedics, etc.); free of charge admission to public or certified private hospital; free of charge doctor on duty-continuous assistance service ("guardia medica").

If you already hold a European Health Insurance Card you can access to SSN services without need to subscribe. On www.asl.milano.it website you can find the general practitioners ("medici generici") working in Milano province according to the city areas. First find the number of the district you are living in ("Servizi online > Trova il tuo distretto") and then the general practitioners operating there ("Servizi online > Trova Medico/Pediatra").

For details, visit the European Commission site (Versione italiana | English version | Versión en Español).

Non-EU citizens, in order to register with the SSN must go to any post office (www.posteitaliane.it), fill in a blank payment form with the following data and pay 149,77 €:

  • c/c postale n.: 379222
  • Intestato a: Amministrazione P.T. Regione Lombardia
  • Causale: iscrizione volontaria S.s.n

IMPORTANT: Piacenza campus students who live in Piacenza (Emilia Romagna region) must fill in the following information:

  • c/c postale n.: 569400
  • intestato a: Amministrazione P.T. - CSSN Regione Emilia Romagna
  • causale: iscrizione volontaria S.s.n

After that, you have to go to the ATS or AUSL (local health office) of your city area. You can view a list of ATS offices in Milano province on the www.asl.milano.it website. First find the number of the district you are living in ("Servizi online > Trova il tuo distretto") and then the ATS offices operating there ("Servizi online > Uffici ASL", then select "prestazione: ufficio scelta e revoca", "servizio: tutti").

In order to register with the SSN you need to submit to the ATS office:

  • certificate of enrolment at Politecnico di Milano
  • your stay permit or the receipt
  • "codice fiscale"
  • copy of your  passport
  • receipt of the payment for the SSN subscription

The insurance is valid one calendar year (January 1st - December 31st).

In case you submit the receipt of the residence permit you will get a provisional health insurance valid for 6 months; when you submit the residence permit you will receive the card valid for one calendar year.

For more information about the access to SSN by foreign citizens please check the guide by the Italian Ministry of Health, available in 9 different languages.

2. Private health insurance

Students can also decide to buy a private health insurance in their own country before departure. In this case check whether there are health assistance agreements between the two countries, moreover it is always advisable that the documentation concerning insurance is validated by the Italian embassy and translated in Italian or in English.

Otherwise students can buy a private health insurance from an Italian company upon arrival.

At the time being, the most convenient among private health insurances is Ina-Assitalia, which provides a health insurance for foreign students. It covers only emergencies and it costs 98 € for a yearly assistance and 49 € for 6 months assistance (from the day of purchase). In order to buy it you have to fill out a blank payment form at any post office with the following data:

  • c/c postale n.: 71270003
  • intestato a: Agenzia Generale di Roma INA ASSITALIA
  • causale: polizza sanitaria studenti stranieri da 6 /12 mesi
